HELPING A FRIEND FIND A JOB
A friend was having trouble finding a job and couldn’t even get an interview. I suggested they create a LinkedIn profile to help them find a job. They said that LinkedIn would not work in their line of work. I convinced them it was worth a try and created a basic video to show them the steps to set up a LinkedIn profile.
They used the video to help them set up a great LinkedIn profile which they attached a link to the emails and job applications they sent out. Within a week they had 5 job interviews setup and within 2 weeks they had a job.
RESEARCHING JOB SEARCH SKILLS
This was the start of my project to research the skills needed to get a job in this new internet age. Hiring managers check people out online before they invite them to interview in person so a great business profile on LinkedIn is important.
Research showed that there are 5 skills that people needed to learn to get a job and promote their career. I include all 5 in my Top 5 Job Search & Career Skills workshop.
1. HOW TO CUSTOM KEYWORD YOUR RESUME
The first skill is learning how to custom keyword a resume for different job applications. If you don’t know how to custom keyword your resume gets rejected by job application software.
2. HOW TO CREATE A LINKEDIN PROFILE
The second skill is how to create a LinkedIn profile that lets them know more about you including testimonials to make them want to meet and interview you. A half empty LinkedIn profile makes it look like you don’t finish projects so you want it complete.
3. HOW TO MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION ONLINE
The third skill is learning how to create a business headshot with a confident smile that makes a great first impression online and makes them want to meet you. Your business headshot is their first impression of you.
Most people don’t know how to look good in photos so we offer How to Look Great in Photographs as a free download on this website as well as in our workshop.
4. HOW TO NETWORK FOR A JOB/CAREER
The fourth skill is how to network online and in person. The majority of jobs are found through networking with people you know recommending you for a job. We show you strategies for networking online as well as in person that are easy to do.
5. HOW TO NAVIGATE ONLINE SEARCH ENGINES
The fifth skill is how to navigate online search engines and setup automatic job alerts. Knowing how to setup your search and use the hidden tools on them can make a big difference in your job search.
My dad always told me, “Son, if you are out of a job, your job is to get a job.” The skills to do a job are different than the skills to get a job.
My hope is that the Top 5 Job Search & Career Skills workshop will help people learn the skills they need to market their career skills to get great jobs throughout their career.
